LYRA String Quartet
This camp combines Suzuki and other methods in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary approach to ensemble playing. Students will have a chance to review and strengthen skills in daily semi-private lessons on their instrument. Students will also enjoy crafts and break times. There will be a demonstration performance at the end of the last class. Please note: children should have some prior instruction, Suzuki Book 1 or 2 or equivalent level. Each student is asked to provide his/her own snack each day.
Bonnie Gartley teaches using a combination of two methods: the Suzuki method and Paul Rolland’s method. Both methods break down violin technique into small steps to be mastered one at a time. Rolland’s method also stresses the importance of tension free playing or having what we love to call "marsh mellow" soft muscles. Because many Suzuki students are relatively young when they start private lessons we delay note reading for a while and focus on developing their ear by lots of singing and listening. Group classes are also a very important part of the method because of the emphasis on repetition, so we play a lot of games, review songs, and play some extra songs that help to review old skills. They are a great way for children to reinforce the skills learned in private lessons, and the students have a great time playing with other kids their age.
This course is for those who have never played a stringed instrument to include the Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass. Music Literacy Skills are taught concurrently with instrumental technique (posture, left hand fingering, Bowing skills) using an eclectic curriculum of method book, ear training, and rhythmic supplements and beginning orchestra music.
Teachers work primarily from the Orchestra Expressions Book 1 for teaching fundamentals in note reading, rhythms, proper posture including right and left hand position and musical expression. Students will perform with the accompaniment CD that goes along with the book. Teachers will also provide scale warmups (D and G Major) handouts. Teachers also incorporate notation practice to reinforce note names, musical expression and rhythms using laminated staves and dry erase markers.
